In mid November, 1914, 5th Division, including the 1st Devonshire battalion of 14 Brigade moved to the Messines Ridge front, north of Neuve Eglise and facing Wytschaete, where they remained for the rest of the winter. On 17th December, 1914, the day on which David Eckstein was killed,1st Devonshire were digging trenches to the east of Wulverghem, returning to billets at night. Digging trenches was not only hard but also dangerous work with the activities being targeted by both shell and sniper fire.
